General Practice Dentistry
Curriculum at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg
The Department of Dentistry offers an American Dental Association accredited General Practice Residency in General Dentistry which has completed more than fifteen years of service to the public and to the education of recent dental graduates. This very unique combination, a large group of dedicated dentists and an institution with a civic responsibility, has developed into one of the most successful hospital-based dental centers in the State of Pennsylvania.
The dental center provides comprehensive dentistry in all the specialty and sub-specialty areas. The LVH-Muhlenberg Dental Center covers all of the specialties with board qualified or board eligible specialists. Patient care and education of the dentist through resident training and continuing education, form a program that constitutes a true Medical Center Dentistry Program.
Presently, Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg operates a 3-chair Dental Health Center that is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. The center provides all phases of dentistry for approximately 5,000 patient visits/year from among the community surrounding the Medical Center.
There is also an emergency dental service available through the Emergency Department 24 hours a day, seven days a week with a dental resident on duty and an Oral & Maxillofacial surgeon on call.
Patient care is provided by 3 general practice dental residents and the dental attending staff.
The resident staff is supervised and augmented by a Program Director and over forty attendings. The attending staff includes board certified and board eligible specialists representing all recognized specialties in dentistry.
The dental residents are exposed to a multitude of disciplines in dentistry and medicine. They are involved in all Medical Center in-patient dental care and rotate through the departments of Anesthesiology, Emergency, and Medicine. Dental education consists of lectures, demonstrations and chairside supervision.
A Continuing education program is given periodically through the Medical Center. These courses cover the most recent developments in dental theory and technique.
The General Practice Dental Residency Program at Muhlenberg is designed to serve as an enhanced educational experience for the recent dental school graduate, while providing comprehensive dental care to a needy segment of our community.
Education enhancement will provide opportunity for the resident to:
- Correlate and integrate the diverse areas of the dental curriculum.
- Develop confidence in the clinical management of patients.
- Fully integrate dental care into the total spectrum of patient medical evaluation and treatment.
- Explore the most current concepts and techniques in clinical use
- Significantly improve clinical skills.
- Enhance a commitment to scholarship and learning along with a keen sense of scientifically based critical assessment of newly developed theories and products.
